Health Certifications - X Ray Results, Etc.

www.offa.org

Of all the breeds I own, in particular, the Spanish Mastiff breed suffers from many health issues in its native country of Spain and everywhere else, and responsible, careful breeding is a must.  In my commitment to produce healthy HD-free litters, I will be having all of my Spanish Mastiffs X rayed and tested for Hip Displaysia.  Results will be posted here on this page.  Although no guarantee that a pup still might crop up in a litter with HD, it further reduces that chance by showing prospective buyers that I am serious about improving this breed in the United States and have the scientific data to back it up.

HD can destroy a dog's ability to perform its duties, and can be passed on to its offspring.

In following the lead of breeders in Europe I will be OFA certifying my breeding stock of Spanish Mastiffs and Pyrenean Mastiffs, and as time goes by, the rest of my LGD breeding stock as time and money permit.

I am proud to be the very first and - at present to my knowledge, the ONLY - breeder of Spanish Mastiffs in the US to take this effort to test all of their breeding dogs...not just one or two...but ALL of them.

The facts do not lie.  A review of the OFA database shows that up until my Patron was certified, there have only been TWO Spanish Mastiffs who've every been OFA'd in this country, according to OFA's database (see link below).   This is pathetic considering how many American breeders have been pumping out puppies for years here in the US.  They have not tested or certified any of their breeding stock.

Is this a risk?  With the Spanish Mastiff breed, most definitely so, inconsideration how much HD affects the breed.
Why don't other American Spanish Mastiff OFA certify their dogs and test for HD like most breeders do in Europe?  That is a good question.  If you are shopping for a puppy I strongly recommend YOU ask other American Spanish Mastiff breeders why they aren't.

Important, please note: Having a show judge do a conformation and structural evaluation on a dog IS NOT THE SAME as having hips or elbows x-rayed and evaluated by a vet and certified and rated by the OFA.
Please be aware there are some Spanish Mastiff breeders in the US having "structural evaluations" done on their litters.  This does NOT mean those pups do NOT have HD.  If they came out of unrated parents, with no scientific proof that they are HD free, this greatly increases the chance of the pups having HD.  No visual examination will ever take the place of X-rays.  Please go to the OFA site for more information on this matter, and what the OFA suggests you do when shopping for a reputable breeder.  Not all LGD breeds suffer from HD but the larger breeds such as the Spanish Mastiff have a history of HD.  Do your homework, and buyer beware.

Should a pup you buy from me come up with HD out of my certified parent stock, it will be replaced with another puppy.  Please check back often as I post results here.  I am not going to hide anything from my customers.  I challenge you to find another Spanish Mastiff breeder in the US who will match my efforts and pledge of HD X raying all of their breeding stock and publicly post the results.

Also, as time goes by, any additional health certifications on my LGD's will also be posted here (eye testing, elbows, etc.).  I want YOU - my potential customer - to know I am doing the best I can to ensure your pup or dog from me will be as sound as it can possibly be to further increase its value to you as a cherished protector of your livestock, ranch, farm and of course, you too....!

Sincerely,  Brenda M. Negri
