Livestock Guardian Dogs - General

*Note there is a growing trend to refer to LGD’s as Livestock Protection Dogs (LPD’s) however, I prefer and will continue to use the term LGD.

Spanish Mastiff (Mastin Espanol)

Because there is such a plethora of mis-information produced in the USA about the Spanish Mastiff,
I recommend going to Spanish and European sources for the most accurate and unbiased information available, rather than reading
some of the pulp fiction and inaccurate breed information produced here by some self-proclaimed 'experts'.  Other than the excellent
works of Cat Ubriikit, most of what is out there on the SM in America in writing, and especially on the Internet,  is very sketchy,
extremely wrong, or written by breeders who's only intent is to promote their own dogs and increase puppy sales.  These are the same people
who claim the SM does not need much exercise, makes a great pet in a small yard, or are only concerned with breeding for show, not work.

Consider the source carefully.  The breed has enough problems already without Americans adding to it, as they already are by mass producing inferior specimens
and emphasizing show conformation and use as pets, instead of promoting the Mastine for its true use as working dogs.

Owning a breed for seven years does NOT make one an expert, nor does it mean they are a good breeder but you'd never know it by reading some US breeder's websites.

Your best bet is using a translator, and getting your information from the country of the breed's origin: SPAIN.

I strongly urge you to go to ORTROS's website, a group which supports the true working Mastine in Spain and everywhere else.  I proudly support their efforts, and own dogs from two of the board members,
Viejo Paramo Kennel and Mastines de Abelgas.

Pyrenean Mastiff (Mastin or Mostin de los Pirineos)

Informative links on the Pyrenean Mastiff Breed that will answer most, if not all, of your questions about this magnificent dog.
You will also be able to see the large variety of types of PM’s as you look at these websites, and learn about its history and use. I hope this helps folks make informed choices about the breed.

I don’t belong to this club mostly because my dogs are bred for working, but here is the link to the PM Club in America. I really don’t know how active it is.:
